Big Town Crime in a Little City

Professor George ZinkhanYesterday around noon, visitors enjoying the festivities surrounding the 30th Twilight Criterium were likely perturbed by the presence of several helicopters, hovering in the downtown area.

From our location nearly 5 miles away, we weren’t aware of the hoopla, so imagine my shock when I read this screaming headline in the local paper today:

UGA Professor Sought in Slayings of Three

accompanied by this sidebar:

Police searching for UGA professor in shooting that killed three at theater

Apparently, George Zinkhan, 56, shot and killed three people yesterday (one of them his wife) and injured two others after an altercation with the three he killed. As I wasn’t there, I will assume everything else is speculation, maybe even deliberate misinformation submitted by the police in an attempt to jump start more leads. Meantime, Professor Zinkhan is at large and a nationwide manhunt is underway. If you see him, please call Athens Clarke-County police at (706) 613-3888, or your local police department. He has family in Austin, TX, and may be headed there. He was last seen driving a red 2005 Jeep Liberty with a Georgia tag number AIX 1376. My guess is you should consider him armed and dangerous.

My sympathies go out to the families and friends of the victims, their colleagues (at least two were UGA professors themselves), and their students.
